Recently I’ve started using NutshellMail. It probably wouldn’t have hit my radar if our company — Constant Contact — hadn’t acquired it, but after learning a little bit about it I decided to give it a whirl.
NutshellMail is an email solution where a person can receive a daily email digest of all the relevant social media interactions going on in that persons social network. It doesn’t hurt that I fit the criteria of a NutshellMail user, someone that on average has too much on their plate to really engage in social media, but still wants to be part of the conversation. After a few days of testing NutshellMail I can already see that it’s going to change my social media experience — and make things a whole lot easier.
For instance, I usually check my email first thing in the morning, but I typically don’t have more than a few minutes before I have to get on with the rest of my morning activities. This morning was no different, except when I opened my email I had a NutshellMail message waiting for me. This email contained all of the important things that went on in my social networks since the last update (I previously set up my account with all of the important things that I wanted to receive).
I quickly examined the email, replying, retweeting and commenting on anything interesting that caught my attention on LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter, closed the email and went on with my morning. What’s cool is that the tools to interact are all right there within the email making it all very seamless. All in all this took about 3 minutes. Later in the day, around 2pm I received another email from NutshellMail where I did the same thing. I’m expecting another email tonight at 8pm and I suspect I’ll do the same thing again. All totaled, I will have spent 9 minutes on social media today and will have gotten more out of it than in the past 9 days.
I honestly didn’t feel inconvenienced by these emails. After all, I picked the times that I wanted to receive them. It also doesn’t feel like I’m leaving my regular workflow. Like most people, I spend most of my day in email already.
There’s something to be said about how much this will change the way small businesses stay connected. Apart from what the name might suggest, I don’t think there’s anything nutty about this way of staying connected. It seems to just work - especially for someone like me who will go for days without ever thinking to check Facebook or Twitter.
Admittedly it’s only been a few days since I’ve started to use NutshellMail so it’ll be interesting to see how my behaviors change over time, but for now, at least in the last 24 hours, my friends and family know what’s on my mind — and there’s nothing wrong with that.
