Client-side Image Composition with HTML5

As Constant Contact produces more and more video content, we’ve started to run into some unlikely bottlenecks in the video creation process. One of the big ones turns out to be the creation of preview thumbnails, which requires compositing a play button over a frame of video and saving out the resulting image. This simple, but still time-consuming, procedure is a problem we’ve solved for Constant Contact customers through our new Insert Video feature, but it’s still been eating up significant time internally! Rather than continue to create these images manually, Labs took a look at the problem and came up with an automated solution that uses some pretty cutting-edge browser features. Read on for details and a demo.

CSV Column Discretization with Java

When mining a large amount of data, often times you end up with a lot of columns with continuous values. While this is the most “pure” version of the data, sometimes you want to cluster these values into bins to do things like creating histograms or just easy analysis of the distribution of the data. I ran into this when I ran a few Hadoop jobs that spit out CSVs as their output. After looking around online for a while, I couldn’t find any readily available solution, so I wrote up something really quickly to do just this.

It’s been awhile since we talked about a web-based version of QuickView, and we thought it would be a good time for an update. For those that are wondering “What is this about”, well, let’s just say we’re trying to give non-iPhone users (such as those running Android, WebOS and the latest Blackberry OS) a first-class mobile app using modern HTML5 enabled devices.

Constant Contact Labs is committed to the research of new technologies in support of our mission to bring innovative new services and products to our small business customers. To that end, we’ve been looking very closely at Location-based services and technology.

Location-based services have their roots in local search but have recently begun to penetrate all aspects of our daily lives. From how and where consumers shop, to the way in which they interact with their social networks, to the places they visit, Location-based services are used in combination to enhance these experiences.
