The Join My Mailing List app for Facebook allows customers to install a tab right into their Facebook Fan Pages, so that visitors interested in subscribing to their mailing lists can sign up directly from Facebook. The Join My Mailing List app is a great way for customers to grow their contact lists right from the place where their visitors and fans are - their Facebook pages.
The Join My Mailing List application for Facebook can be installed to any Facebook Fan Page. For complete instructions and FAQs for application installation, please start at the application’s installation page on Facebook.
The Facebook application installation process can be tricky! Below find answers to our customers’ frequently asked questions.
Q: I’m trying to install the app to my Fan Page, but no matter what I do the tab won’t show up. There are no + or >> tabs there. What do I do?
A: Here’s an alternate method to try, to get the tab to appear on your fan page:
1. Click this Facebook link, to view all of the fan pages for your currently logged-in Facebook account: http://facebook.com/pages/manage
2. If you have multiple fan pages, click on “Edit Page” under the one you’re trying to install the Join My List application to. (If you only have one fan page for this account, you can skip this step.)
3. In the “Applications” area of this page, locate the entry named “Constant Contact Labs - Join My Mailing List”. Click the “Edit Settings” link underneath it.
4. In the window that opens, look for the word “Tab:” under the “Profile” tab. If it reads “Available (add)”, please click the word “add”.
5. Ensure that your “Privacy” setting is set to “Everyone”.
6. Click the “Okay” button.
If you’re able to complete all of these steps, please now go check your fan page again for the “Join My List” tab. If you still don’t see it, please also look for a tab with two arrows on it like this: >> . If you see one, click on that tab, and look for “Join My List” inside of it.
Q: Why does the “Join My List” tab keep disappearing from my Fan Page?
A: Facebook may limit the number of tabs that are visible. If you believe you should see ours but don’t, don’t worry - there may already be a tab for it, but the tab may be hidden.
To see if you have a hidden tab, look for a tab that looks like this: ” >> “. If you see a tab like that, click on it and look for the Join My List entry there. If you see it, great! We’ve found it. To make it visible to your visitors, click on the “Join My List” text with your mouse, hold the mouse button down, and drag the entry out to be next to your Wall and Info tabs. Then, release the mouse to make the tab stay there.
Q: When I go to the application page, why don’t I see a link to “Add to my Page”?
A: There are a few reasons why this might happen:
* You must be logged into Facebook to see the link. Check the top-right corner of the app page; if you see text entry boxes for your username and password, you aren’t logged in.
* You must have at least one fan page set up in order to see the link. To add a fan page, edit your Facebook settings or click here.
* You must complete setup of your Facebook profile before you can see the link. On the application page, if you see a link at the top of the page to “Create Your Profile,” please follow those instructions to setup your profile and come back to the application page when finished.
* If you have a business account - that is, a fan page with NO link to a personal profile - you won’t see the “Add to my Page” button. This is a known Facebook bug, and unfortunately there’s nothing we can do about it. More info here. The relevant section reads, “If you are trying to install it on a business account that has no personal profile, there is a known Facebook bug that prevents you from installing applications. Until Facebook fixes that, one way of working around this is to connect your personal Facebook account to your business Page as an administrator”
Q: When I go to the application page and click “Add to my Page”, my page isn’t listed there anymore. It used to be there. What happened?
A: If you’ve already gone to this link before and clicked on your page, then it won’t appear anymore because you’ve already added the application to that page. This is good news - you’ve finished this step! Please continue with the instructions at the next step.
Q: I’m trying to provide the application with my Constant Contact business partner credentials, but it won’t work. What’s going on?
A: The Join My Mailing List application links not to your Business Partner account, but to individual Constant Contact client accounts. If you’re trying to install this application to one of your own Fan Pages, you’ll need to use your associated Site Owner credentials. All Business Partners are given these; if you’re not sure what yours are, please call support and they’ll be happy to help you out.
If you’re adding the application on behalf of a client, you’ll need to provide the associated client’s Constant Contact login credentials instead of your own. This is because the application adds new signups directly to contact lists in your clients’ accounts - so it needs to have the username and password stored so that it can make these additions on the client’s behalf. For each Facebook page you install the application to, you’ll be asked to provide Constant Contact client login info. The information you provide to the application for that page will be the account that it integrates with for that page. You can provide different client logins on different client pages, of course, and once you’ve entered valid information the configuration page will tell you which client’s username it’s integrating with. This should help a bit to keep all the configurations straight.
Q: Can I install the Join My List application to a Facebook group or a personal Profile?
A: Unfortunately, the Join My List application can’t be installed to a Facebook group, or to a personal Profile. This is out of our control - it’s actually a Facebook limitation that groups and Profiles can’t have any applications installed into them. As a result, we’re only able get the Join My List application to install to Fan Pages. If you’d like to set up a fan page, though, the Join My List application will certainly install there!
Q: The application won’t take my Constant Contact user name and password. What’s going on?
A: If the user name and password that you’re using aren’t working, the first thing to do is to try the same information at constantcontact.com to see if it works there. If that does work, then the most likely reason for trouble is that your user name needs to be updated in accordance with our new user name guidelines. Please take a look at this link, and check to see if your user name needs to be updated:
If it does, please follow these instructions to update it:
Alternately, you can call our customer support line at 1-866-876-8464, and they’ll be happy to help out.
Q: When I go to a step that’s supposed to give me the Allow dialog, instead my browser redirects over and over again. What’s wrong?
A: Your web browser may have cookies blocked or disabled, and you’ll need to temporarily set it to Allow All in order to let Facebook connect to our application for the first time. Please give that a shot, and then follow this link to try to force the Allow box:
http://apps.facebook.com/ctctjmml/?force_login=true
Q: Why doesn’t this app respect my contact info settings and customization from constantcontact.com JMML?
A: The Join My List application for Facebook is entirely separate from the traditional Constant Contact JMML signup options, and they don’t synchronize. Your desire to customize the name, display, and required state of contact information fields is a feature we’re looking at adding to the Facebook application, though we haven’t had a chance to yet.
Q: How can I add this application as a box on my page, instead of as a tab?
A: The Join My List application for Facebook can only be installed as a tab, not as a box - this is actually out of our control, as Facebook has changed their policy to only allow tab installations.
Q: How do I remove this application from my fan page?
A: You can remove the application from a fan page like this:
1. Go to facebook.com and make sure that you’re logged in.
2. Click on the “Home” link in the top-right corner of the screen to return to your Home Facebook page.
3. On the left side of this Home page is a list. Look for and click the “Ads and Pages” entry. (If your list is long and it isn’t there, click the “More” link to reveal the rest of your list.)
4. Click “Edit Page” on the page you’d like to remove the application from. (If you only have one page, you can skip this step.)
5. On the next page, click “Apps” on the left-side list.
6. Look for “Constant Contact Labs - Join My Mailing List” on the fan page you’d like to remove it from.
7. Click the X for the listing.
8. A confirmation pops up. Click “Remove”.
Q: How can I see which of my contacts were added from Facebook?
A: Currently there’s no way to do this, but we are storing this information and we’re working on a way to show it to you. In the meantime, you can work around this problem by creating a contact list named “Facebook Friends” (or something like that) and setting it as the default list for Facebook signups.
Q: Can I change the name of the “Join My List” app?
A: Yes! Here’s how to do it:
4. Click “Edit Page” on the page you’d like to change the name of the application on. (If you only have one page, you can skip this step.)
5. On the next page, click “Apps” on the left side list.
6. Look for a “Constant Contact Labs - Join My Mailing List” entry, and click “Edit Settings” for it.
7. Modify the “Custom Tab Name” field to contain the new name you’d like for the app, then click “Save”.
8. Click “Okay” to close the Edit Settings dialog. You’re done!

It worked fine! The install instructions are very precise and easy to follow. Thank you!
But all my contacts are from Brazil, is there a way to change the language to Brazilian Portuguese?
Thanks in advance.
Regards,
Marcos
Jim Garretson | 9:08 AM October 5, 2010
Hi Marcos, Thanks for the kind words! We don’t yet offer the ability to customize the language for signups, but it’s something that we are working on! Please keep an eye on our app’s Facebook page for the latest news on that front: http://www.facebook.com/ctctjmml
Tina | 3:21 PM October 15, 2010
Hi there,
My question is because when I tested out the tab, I realized that the text that shows up is a little strange. It gives my company name twice in the signature and the wording is a little awkward. Is there any way to edit this page?
Thank you.
Jim Garretson | 4:49 PM October 15, 2010
Hi Tina, You can certainly edit your custom text - to do so, just click on your Join My List tab, and then click the “Application Settings” button at the bottom of the tab area.
Hans | 11:37 AM November 9, 2010
how can post again in wall page the event where add the app?
Hans | 11:42 AM November 9, 2010
How publish again the history to the page wall?.. please I need a anwers!! Thanks
Al Krismer | 3:08 PM November 14, 2010
The app works fine, but in the sign up box, I just want people to fill in name, address, city, state, and zip. I am not interested in the phone number etc. On the regular sign up there were astericks on the require fields but none on this sign up form.
Natalie @YMCbuzz | 7:16 PM November 15, 2010
Is there any way to change the name of the tab from Join my List to “Join the Club”? “Join the Club” is one of our main taglines!
Joseph Henrich | 10:57 AM November 16, 2010
Hans, you can make a wall post with a link to your tab if you want. Right click on your tab and you can copy a link to that page.
Al, currently we don’t support customization of the additional information, but it is one of the things we’d like to add. Currently all those fields are optional, so anyone can sign up and ignore them.
Natalie, we’d love to be able to allow you to change the name of the tab, however, facebook doesn’t allow customization of an application’s tab name.
Renee | 1:53 PM November 16, 2010
Is it true we cannot use this application on a business page? I’m having a hard time, it won’t allow me to log in as a CC customer on FB, therefore cannot activate.
Joseph Henrich | 3:02 PM November 16, 2010
Hi Renee, you can install the app on a business fan page, but not a business profile. If you have any other questions please feel free to contact us: http://www.ctctlabs.com/index.php/about/contact/
Georgina Lester | 7:01 AM November 18, 2010
I love this application but for some reason - even though the settings have been saved it is not appearing in the public page. Instead when I click on the “Join My Mailing List” tab - it comes up with a message saying Oops! This application has not yet been set up.
Can you offer some suggestions as to why this might be.
Thanks
Joseph Henrich | 11:13 AM November 18, 2010
Georgina, there are two settings in the application settings page that need to be set before the application is fully set up. You need to link the app to a Constant Contact account and you need to select a default list. Once both of those are set you should see be good to go.
Trefor | 8:20 PM November 18, 2010
This is a great tool. Thanks!
A quick question. How can I edit the confirmation email that gets sent to the individual that signs up? Thanks
trefor
Joseph Henrich | 11:57 AM November 19, 2010
Hi Trefor,
You can learn about customizing your welcome letter here http://constantcontact.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/constantcontact.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=1829
Patty | 9:22 AM November 30, 2010
When I try to install this app to my fan page (I do not want to set up a personal profile), I get a facebook message that the feature is only available if I have a personal profile page. What am I doing wrong?
Joseph Henrich | 10:19 AM November 30, 2010
The facebook application needs to be installed by a personal facebook account. Most fan pages were created by such an account and so have no issue. However, if your fan page was created by a non personal account, such as a business account, you can install the app by adding a personal account as an administrator of the page and then logging in as that account and installing the app.
You can add a personal account as an admin by following the steps below:
To add a personal profile as an admin follow these steps:
1. Go to your page and click on the Edit Page under your picture
2. Click on Manage Admins
3. Type the name of the admin in the box and hit save
To confirm that you are added properly, go to http://facebook.com/pages/manage that will list all the pages which the current account is an admin.
Donna | 1:55 PM December 10, 2010
Is there anyway to remove or customize the graphic (the silhouette of the crowd of people) that appears at the top? We have a newsletter masthead that we’d like to use there, and it looks awkward at the bottom. Thanks!
Joseph Henrich | 2:15 PM December 10, 2010
Hi Donna,
Right now there background image isn’t customizable, however, we’ll keep it in mind for a future release.
Sanam | 3:24 PM December 29, 2010
I really like this app and it is working wonderfully so far. Thanks for putting it out.
I have a question though. Is there a way to change the formatting on the Join my list page?
Thanks
Joseph Henrich | 11:39 AM January 3, 2011
Hi Sanam,
The app only allows you to change the text and add an image, you can’t change the layout, font face or font size.
Dimitra Oldham | 10:03 PM February 22, 2011
I have added the app to my fan page, however i can not seem to add more than 1 “interest” list for people to receive email about different interests.
Can you please provide the detailed instructions on how to do this.
thanks
Joseph Henrich | 11:24 AM February 23, 2011
Hi Dimitra,
You can select additional lists that people can choose to sign up for in the Application Settings, however, a user is only automatically signed up for one list: the default list.
Sanford Lewis | 8:48 AM March 2, 2011
I also wouldlike to customize the graphic. Hope you’ll address soon.
Judy | 3:00 PM March 7, 2011
Hey there! I’d like to add more boxes so I can capture the persons name, city, st and phone. How do I add those?
Thanks!
Joseph Henrich | 1:48 PM March 8, 2011
Judy, all of those fields are optional fields on the second page of the app. Once a contact has submitted their email address they will have the option to add those.
Jon | 2:25 PM June 24, 2011
Just adding my voice to the requests for customizable formatting and background graphics.
How long before this becomes available?
Jim Garretson | 2:39 PM June 24, 2011
Hi Jon, I’m sorry, but our general policy is not to share info on anything we might be planning for the future. I understand you’d very much like to be able to customize the formatting and background graphics for the Facebook JMML app, though.
Jamie | 1:50 PM July 8, 2011
I’ve been trying to upload a picture to the background and I get the message that it has been saved successfully, however when I go back to click on the page the image doesn’t appear, I’ve tried using a picture from flickr and from my facebook album, what am I doing wrong?
Joseph Henrich | 9:37 AM July 11, 2011
Hi Jamie, it sounds like you might be having a problem because the sites hosting the image you are trying to include are giving you a tracked link and not a direct link to the image. If that is the case when we try and put the image on the page facebook makes it tracked again and this often doesn’t work. We need a direct link to the image to be able to put it on the page.
Kazu | 11:53 AM July 11, 2011
Hi
I set up “Join My Mailing List Form” on my fb fan page. Can I edit “Contact info form” which is asked to sign up people?
There are lot of contact info column. I’d like to reduce that.
Thank you!
Katy | 8:10 PM July 17, 2011
Hi,
I love the plugin, but is there a way to change the icon and appearance of the page? if so, could you make the icon something more universal, like an envelope, and implement a way to change the people silhouette graphic? I understand that you want to promote your business, but it would look more professional if you let people pick their own graphics, or just removed the graphics.
Thanks,
Katy
Joseph Henrich | 9:36 AM July 18, 2011
Hi Katy,
I’m glad to hear you like our app!
Facebook does not currently allow an app to have a customizable icon, but if they did we’d be happy to let you change the icon.
Currently the app does not allow you to change the background image, but I’ll make a note that you’d like the option to change it.
Nicole | 2:35 PM September 6, 2011
I work for a non-profit and I’m interested in using your app on our FB page. However, I was wondering what happens to the contact info people submit via the app, what do you guys do with it, if anything. I don’t want donors to worry about their contact info being sold or receiving spam because they used this app. I looked on your website for an answer to this but couldn’t find it. Thanks!
Joseph Henrich | 2:50 PM September 6, 2011
Hi Nicole,
The information is added to your Constant Contact account. It is not put anywhere else, and we certainly don’t give away or sell that information!
Nicole | 2:52 PM September 6, 2011
Great! Thanks so much for getting back with me so quickly
!
Tally | 7:54 AM September 27, 2011
Hi,
All worked really well and very easy to install. Thanks. The only problem that I am having it adding a picture. How do I do that, you’re asking for a URL? it’s on my desktop. Also am I able to add a video on the page?

Ryan Gerard | 11:52 AM November 4, 2011
Hi,
Is there a way to make the ‘join my list’ page the default page that people will see when they visit our fan page, rather than our wall?
Jim Garretson | 11:57 AM November 4, 2011
Hi Ryan, Yep, just set that Join My List tab as your page’s default tab. Here’s how: http://www.facebook.com/help/?faq=14899
Brian | 10:57 AM November 5, 2011
I am having difficulty getting the app to appear on my fan page after I select it from the installation area. I tried looking under the edit area of my page to see if the app was hidden, but I can’t find it there either.
Linden | 12:01 PM November 14, 2011
I was able to install the mailing list app on my Facebook Business Page, but when I try to set it up, it’s telling me only the owner has access to this application. I am the owner and the sole administrator. Any suggestions on how to overcome this?
Tiffany | 10:42 AM November 16, 2011
Hi, Facebook,
How can we change the text fields on the second screen of the Join My List app? I’d like to add a field that’s important to us (one that we’ve already added inside our Constant Contact account) and eliminate some of the others we don’t care about and therefore would prefer our subscribers not be asked.
Also, do you have an update on when we’ll be able to customize the background image on this app? And if we can’t customize it, can you at least give us a few options? I agree with Katy’s comment that something more universal would be nice; the faceless people are a bit creepy.
Many thanks! Except for these two things, the app is very nice and easy to install.
Tiffany
Tiffany | 10:54 AM November 16, 2011
Sorry, my message above should have started with, “Hi, Constant Contact”, not “Hi, Facebook”!
Dan | 3:07 PM December 8, 2011
I use the custom fields in the web based subscription form to colect information like birth day and month to use to email birtday coupons, and spouse name. It looks like in the facebook app what I have selected as required fields and custom fields do not work with the app. Is there any way to change the fields in the Facebook app?
Jim Garretson | 10:18 PM December 8, 2011
Hi Dan, Unfortunately, that’s not yet possible to do. But thanks for letting us know it’s something you’d like to see added!
Mathew | 10:23 AM December 27, 2011
Hey, I was wondering if there were any plans to include code for Google Analytics like other apps have done? If there is a way to do it I could use the help to see how many are actually using/visiting our Constant Contact page on Facebook.
Jim Garretson | 9:36 AM December 28, 2011
Hi Mathew, We do not have plans to offer Analytics integration right now, but you should be able to get a better understanding of traffic to your pages using Facebook Insights. Have you checked that out? - http://www.facebook.com/help/?page=205260336179771
Mandy Landa | 12:16 AM January 2, 2012
Great app, but we are not able to change the background image which we would like to use to brand ourselves better. Thanks.
Kelly | 9:47 AM January 2, 2012
I can’t get it to work. it keeps directing me to add the app page and doesnt go any further.
